It’s citrus season and we are celebrating with this gorgeous blood orange slush. This sweet creamy drink can be made as a cocktail or mocktail and is blended with ice to make it perfect for the spring and summertime.
Let’s get started…
Begin by scrubbing 3 blood oranges really well. The rinds are blended into the drink, so you want to be sure that they are extra clean.
Slice them into eighths and gather 3 cups of filtered water and 10 ounces of sweetened condensed milk.
Sweetened condensed milk gives you all of the sweetness and creaminess that you’ll need for this drink, which keeps the ingredient list to just the blood oranges, sweetened condensed milk, water and ice. Easy, right?
If you are familiar with making Brazilian lemonade, this drink is similar, but with blood oranges instead of limes, so the flavors lean more toward sweet than tart.
Now that the ingredients have been gathered, add 3 cups of filtered water and the blood orange wedges into a high speed blender and blend until the oranges have been broken down into tiny pieces. This should take about 30 seconds or so.
Pour the mixture through a mesh strainer and rinse the blender out quickly to remove any leftover pieces of rind.
Return the strained mixture to the blender along with 10 ounces of sweetened condensed milk and 3 cups of ice and blender until creamy.
Pour this creamy, slushy drink over some ice cubes or straight into glasses and garnish with a few slices of beautiful blood orange and maybe a little sprig of something green like mint or thyme…
This drink is just fabulous. Blood oranges are natural sweet with just a hint of tartness and some floral notes too… all of these flavors work perfectly with the sweet creaminess of the sweetened condensed milk.
This mocktail is so easy! Just slice, blend and re-blend then enjoy and if you want to transform this mocktail into something a little more adult then simple add a shot of vodka or champagne and get that party started…
