Chocolate Affogato al Caffè

The beautiful and delicious affogato al caffè is a classic Italian coffee dessert. Combining just a few simple ingredients, this cool treat is a coffee lovers dream dessert.

Translating to “drowned in coffee”, the affogato al caffè is a simple, but fabulous dessert combing ice cream and coffee in one surprisingly luscious dessert.

Let’s get started…

To make an affogato, all you technically need is ice cream and espresso or strongly brewed coffee, but if we are making ourselves an affogato, why not do this thing right?

As you can see above, I start my affogato with 1 tablespoon of a good quality chocolate sauce. I love Ghirardelli’s Black Label Chocolate Sauce, but use what you have on hand.

Now we add the ice cream. I am adding 2 small scoops of dutch chocolate ice cream today, but any chocolate ice cream that you have in your freezer will be great (its chocolate ice cream, right?).

Next, add 2 shots of espresso or 1/4 cup of strongly brewed coffee and top with whipped cream…

… and last, but not least, shave a little chocolate over the whipped cream and maybe dust a little espresso powder over the glass and your affogato al caffè is ready to be enjoyed.

It’s a little dessert that will bring you lots of happiness. It doesn’t take much of an imagination to believe that chocolate sauce, chocolate ice cream, coffee and whipped cream joining forces is a really good thing.

And it totally is…

The next time you have some chocolate ice cream chilling in your freezer (ours always disappears for some reason) and are craving a quick, simple dessert (every day… all day), make yourself a chocolate affogato al caffè.

Chocolate Affogato al Caffè

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of chocolate sauce
  • 2 small scoops of chocolate ice cream
  • 2 shots of espresso (or 1/4 cup of strongly brewed coffee)
  • 1/4 cup of whipped cream
  • chocolate shavings (garnish)
  • espresso powder (garnish)

Instructions

  • Add 1 tablespoon of chocolate sauce into the bottom of a small heat proof dessert glass
  • Top with 2 small scoops of chocolate ice cream
  • Pour 2 shots of espresso or 1/4 cup of strongly brewed coffee over the ice cream
  • Top with whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings and espresso powder (optional)
