These beautiful little golden brown dinner rolls are fluffy, chewy and glazed in a honey butter that makes having one absolutely impossible. They have great texture, wonderful flavor and pair well with everything from a salad to barbecue and are the perfect addition to any holiday table.
Let’s get them started…
Begin by gathering 1 1/2 teaspoons of instant yeast (1 packet), 380 grams of all purpose flour (about 3 cups), 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 3/4 cup of whole milk, 3 tablespoons of honey, 4 tablespoons of room temperature butter and 1 large egg.
This dough can be brought together by hand or in a stand mixer, it just depends on how hard you want to work! Today, I am using my stand mixer, but I usually make bread by hand. Kneading dough by hand is a great way to work off the incoming carbs!
Start by whisking together 380 grams of all purpose flour with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1 packet of instant yeast.
Next, add 3/4 cup of warm milk, 1 egg and 3 tablespoons of honey into the mixing bowl along with 4 tablespoons of room temperature butter. The milk should be right around 100-110 degrees to properly activate the yeast. I suggest confirming the temperature with a digital thermometer, but if you do not have one, the milk should feel like warm bath water.
Using a stiff spatula or the dough hook attachment of your stand mixer, mix until the ingredients are fully combined and then continue kneading for 3-5 minutes or until the dough is smooth.
Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and let the dough rest in a warm place until it has doubled in size, which should take 45-60 minutes.
Look at that beautifully puffy dough!
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and divide it in half. Use your fingers to gently form one of the halves into a rectangle and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness, maintaining the rectangular shape as much as possible.
Use a sharp knife to trim the outer edges into a nice clean rectangle and add the scraps you trim away to the other half of the dough. Cut strips into the large rectangle to form smaller rectangles as in the photo above.
Cut each rectangle in half diagonally to form long triangles and then roll these triangles as you would a croissant, starting from the widest end and working your way towards the narrow end…
Transfer each shaped roll onto a baking sheet leaving a little bit of space in between each one and then repeat the rolling and shaping process with the other half of the dough.
Once all of the dough has been rolled out and shaped, cover the baking sheet lightly with plastic wrap and let the rolls rest for about 30 minutes in a warm place.
While the rolls are resting, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and whisk 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of milk in a small bowl.
Once the rolls are rested and puffy, brush each one with the egg wash and bake the rolls in a preheated 350 degree oven in the middle of the oven for about 20 minutes. I made my rolls on the little side and they were golden brown right at 20 minutes, but if you made your rolls larger, they may take a bit longer to bake. Just keep an eye on them and as soon as they are puffy and golden brown, they are ready…
As soon as you pull the rolls out, whisk 6 tablespoons of melted butter with 1/4 cup of honey and brush each roll with this delicious glaze while they are still hot. I like to do this on the baking sheet, but you could also transfer them to a cooling rack with some parchment paper or paper towels underneath to catch excess honey butter. Either way, just brush those hot little rolls with honey butter…
Look at these beautiful dinner rolls… they are golden brown with a light, chewy center and smothered in honey and butter… could there be a better combination than warm bread, honey and butter?
Doubt it…
So, the texture is amazing, the flavors are fabulous, but there is something else that I absolutely love about these rolls. You can unroll them as you eat them and that makes me smile. It’s the little things right.
If you are looking for some dinner rolls to serve with Sunday dinner, want more buttery sweet carbs in your life or need some bread for your holiday dinner table, you need these honey butter dinner rolls.
You are going to be so glad that you made them…
