Twinkie & Kuro
I would love to introduce you to my boys, Twinkie and Kuro. Twinkie is an eight year old Malti-poo and Kuro is a two year old Giant Schnauzer. My husband’s job moves us a lot, so although we both love dogs, we went nine years of marriage and moving around the world before we got a dog.
Two years ago, my parents gave us Twinkie. We have known Twinkie for his whole life. I was with my mom when she went to the breeder to pick him out of a litter of little cotton balls and we bonded with him every time we returned home to visit for the holidays, so when my parents asked if we could take him, we were very excited to have him with us.
Although our lives are different, he fit right in. He is a total trooper. My parents live on a quiet farm, way off of the road and he didn’t get a whole lot of action for the first seven years of his life. Now, he lives in town, right down the street from a firehouse and he goes for walks downtown and goes to the hardware store with us and none of this has phased him one bit. I am in awe of his flexibility in life. We should all be more like Twinkie.
Twinkie has a fabulous personality. He is not afraid of anything, he loves food and going to dog friendly restaurants and he considers everyone that he meets his best friend. He prefers to sleep most of the day, but when he is awake, he is ready for a real good time.
Twinkie’s “little” brother is a two year old Giant Schnauzer named Kuro. Two years ago, all three of us drove way up into the mountains to pick him out of a big pile of black fuzz balls. Most of the other puppies were running around, barking and wrestling with each other and then there was Kuro laying flat on his side using his best side eye to get our attention. You could tell that he wanted our attention, but also just wanted to be lazy. I asked the breeder if he was ok and he said “Yep! That one just lays around all the time.”… SOLD! We picked him up and he was super comfortable in our arms and had the most beautiful face, so we put him in the back seat with Twinkie and drove back home a family of four.
In the very beginning, Kuro was not much bigger than Twinkie and this worked out perfect. Twinkie occasionally explained that he was going to be the boss of this operation and Kuro was happy to be his faithful side kick. Twinkie gave him a tour of his neighborhood and showed him the ropes…
Since then, Kuro has grown… a lot. He is currently 100 pounds of beard, nose and back muscles. He is still super handsome, still pretty lazy and an all around fabulous dog.
Kuro is super honest and completely obsessed with my husband. We knew going in that Giant Schnauzers are often described as “one person” dogs. We were totally comfortable with that and did our best to work with him equally, but I ended up being surprised at how his personality developed. My husband is his main squeeze. They do everything together, he is super locked on to him when they train together and run together and he stares at him with pure adoration. I am also his person, but in a much different way…
Kuro feels that it is his responsibility to keep me safe. When we are out in town, he prefers that I stay close to him. Its funny because although my husband is his BFF, if he walks off to talk to someone or steps out of view, Kuro is cool with that. I think he knows that my husband is perfectly capable of protecting himself. On the other hand, if I walk off and start talking to strangers, Kuro is not pleased. He needs to keep an eye on me… or so he thinks.
Kuro and Twinkie bring a lot of fun to our home and put smiles on our face daily, so I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce them to you. The next time I mention them here or on Instagram, you will know a bit more about my boys 🙂
