Roasted Vegetable Soft Dog Food

If you have been following this blog for a while, you’ll know that I recently started making my dogs food. After struggling with sensitive stomachs and the high cost of high quality store bought dog food, I took the plunge and my dogs have been so happy ever since!

Similar to my original homemade dog food recipe, this roasted vegetable soft dog food is nutritionally balanced and full of what your dogs body needs to stay happy and healthy. This recipe is a bit softer in texture than the original recipe, which is perfect for older dogs or dogs that require a soft diet. It is full of roasted sweet potatoes, carrots, chicken and plenty of other delicious ingredients that your dogs will love.

Let’s get started…

Begin by gathering your ingredients. You will need 4 pounds of organic chicken, 1 pound of carrots, 1 pound of sweet potatoes, 28 ounces of brown rice, 4 cups of old fashioned oats, 1 cup of ground flaxseed, 15 ounces of pumpkin purée, 2 cups of organic bone broth and a small bunch of fresh parsley.

Choose organic ingredients and I highly recommend adding a vitamin and pro-biotic supplement to your dogs daily diet to help balance out all of their needs.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and peel and dice your carrots and sweet potatoes. Although they will be soft after roasting, be sure to dice the carrots and sweet potatoes into easily bite sized pieces. Place them into a deep roasting pan and place them into the oven.

Add your chicken into a separate deep roasting pan and place them next to the carrots and sweet potatoes. Roast everything at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes or until the vegetables are soft and the chicken is cooked through.

Transfer the roasting pans onto heat proof surfaces and allow the carrots, sweet potatoes and chicken to come to room temperature while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Cook the brown rice and oats according to manufacturers instructions and allow them to cool.

Once everything is cooked and has cooled down a bit, it is time to begin combining everything!

Be sure to have a large enough stock pot to fit all of the ingredients into. I like to set mine in my kitchen sink and layer the ingredients in, mixing as I add.

If you do not have a large enough stock pot, you can divide the ingredients in half for easier mixing. This is the hardest step in making a big batch of dog food, but with a good stiff spoon and a large stock pot, you can do it!

Once the food is made and mixed thoroughly, it is time to divide it up for storage. I used to add 2 cup portions into zip lock bags, but that was messy and the bags are tough to re-use, so I ordered dishwasher safe to-go food containers off of Amazon and love how easy this system is. You can write the date on the lid and it washes off in the dishwasher, so they are ready to go for the next batch!

This roasted vegetable soft dog food stays fresh in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 days and the remaining portions can be frozen for several months. This batch makes about 18 two cup portions.

I hope your dogs love this soft, tasty homemade dog food like mine do. Every time I crack open the refrigerator, they go crazy, so don’t say I didn’t warn you…
