I love taco seasoning. I remember loving the nights that my mom would cook up some ground beef seasoned with a bag of McCormick’s taco seasoning mix… a real classic. The blend of cumin, paprika, chili powder, chipotle powder and garlic just makes me happy.
You can use taco seasoning in non-taco recipes too. I love using it on a chicken breast or as steak seasoning and I add a tablespoon into my chili and tortilla soup too. It’s a versatile, delicious spice blend and if you find yourself using a lot of it, you may want to whip up a big batch of your own.
Let’s get it started…
As with most spice blends, this one is super simple to make and really easy to customize. Combine 2 teaspoons of chili powder, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano (Mexican oregano recommended), 1/2 teaspoon of chipotle seasoning (optional), 1/2 teaspoon of salt (optional), 1/4 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper.
Thats it!
You can make this spice blend without adding additional salt and it will taste fantastic. If you prefer a spicier blend, add more crushed red pepper or some cayenne and you’ll have a little more of a kick.
Whether you add this taco seasoning to some chicken, steak, ground beef or shrimp, your taco Tuesday will be the most delicious taco Tuesday of all time…. until you use this spice blend again, that is…
