The Classic Breakfast Sandwich

Every time I bake a loaf of bread, english muffins or bagels, my husband puts in an official request for a breakfast sandwich soon after. Breakfast sandwiches are super easy to make at home and you can make them exactly how you want them.

Sound like something you’d be interested in? Well then let’s get started…

Begin by choosing your bread. A breakfast sandwich can be made on any kind of bread really, so you use your favorite or whatever you have on hand. I love using sourdough slices, but english muffins, bagels and hoagies work great too!

My favorite way to prepare the bread is lightly grilled with just a little bit of mayonnaise. The mayo creates such a beautifully golden brown crust in just a few minutes on a griddle or flat skillet over medium heat. This is such a delicious way to prep your bread.

You can also use plain bread or simply toast it up in a toaster.

Now that the bread has been settled on, choose your meat. My two favorites are bacon and pancetta (technically, both are bacon), but you can use sausage, turkey bacon, ham or even thinly sliced deli meat. The easiest (and cleanest) way to cook up bacon, pancetta, sausage or ham is to bake it in the oven.

Place your meat of choice onto a baking sheet and bake in a 400 degree oven until your bacon or pancetta is crispy (20-25 minutes) or your sausage is cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees (20-25 minutes) or until the ham is heated through and sizzling (assuming you are starting with cooked ham, of course).

Now if you happen to have a steak weight and cast iron skillet, this is a wonderful way to cook up crisp bacon on your stovetop.

Now that you are settled on your meat of choice, it is time to choose your cheese. This is an important choice, as the cheese you choice really impacts the overall flavor of the sandwich. I love a good sharp cheddar, but you can use everything from a mild mozzarella or American cheese to nutty Swiss, a smooth provolone or bold gouda. The choices when it comes to cheese are many, but this is an easy (and no cooking necessary) way to impart your favorite flavors into your own breakfast sandwich.

The final step is cooking your eggs and you have several options here.

      • Fried eggs – this is the most commonly used method. Its quick, easy and you can cook them up over easy, sunny side up or over hard if you prefer your yolk cooked through.
      • Scrambled eggs – if you prefer your eggs scrambled, try spreading them out thin as they cook and then folding them over similar to how you would an omelette.
      • Poached eggs – if you love poached eggs, but don’t want the hassle of perfecting this method then I would love for you to try my super easy, foolproof egg poaching method here.
      • Hard boiled eggs – yes! Smashing hard boiled eggs on your breakfast sandwich is a wonderful option!

Now that you have bread, meat, cheese and eggs all settled, it is time to assemble!

I like to add my cheese right onto the bread as soon as it has been grilled or toasted. The heat will melt the cheese a bit and this helps keep the sandwich together. I also add a little cheese onto my eggs too sometimes…. you can never have too much cheese, right?

Now, all you have to do is add your meat and eggs and maybe a little handful of arugula or spinach, if you feel like including something fresh and green to your sandwich.

Add the top piece of bread, slice your sandwich in half and enjoy…

Some crispy bacon, a runny yolked egg and melty cheese on buttery grilled bread is definitely one of my very favorite ways to start the day. Whether you use english muffins, toasted rye or an everything bagel, making your own breakfast sandwich should definitely be added to your recipe list soon.
