Tropical Açaí Smoothie

Ah the tropics…. Warm, salty air with sand between your toes and the sun shining on your face. That is the life.

Today in Virginia, it is in the upper 30’s and raining…. not one bit tropical. Although today’s weather may not be giving off those beautiful tropical vibes, I can still enjoy the flavors of the tropics in my morning smoothie….

This smoothie is full of fresh pineapple, some berries, banana, lime juice and açaí. With a little greek yogurt and any powdered supplements you want to toss in, you can transport yourself straight to the tropics without those pesky long flights and customs lines.

In addition to its festive flavors, this smoothie is full of vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants and enzymes that aid in digestion. I always feel fabulous after starting my morning with this tropical açaí smoothie and I think you will too.

Let’s get this smoothie started…

To make this smoothie, you can use any combination of fresh or frozen fruits. I always use frozen açaí (try to get the kind with nothing else added) and frozen bananas. Using a few frozen fruits will give you that thick, chilly smoothie texture that people often add ice cubes to achieve. Today I am using fresh berries and pineapple, but use what you have or can find at your grocery store. During some seasons, fresh is the way to go, but during other times of the year, I head straight to the frozen fruit aisle.

For 2 meal sized smoothies, you will need 2 cups of pineapple cut into big chunks, 200 grams of frozen açaí, 1 cup of strawberries, 1/2 cup of blueberries, 1 banana, 1/2 cup of greek yogurt (plain or vanilla), 1 lime and between 1/4-1/2 cup of orange juice or almond milk (depending on how thin or thick you want your smoothie). I also add my powdered vitamins, supplements and occasionally some protein powder into this smoothie.

Add everything into you blender or a large food processor and blend until completely combined. Scrape the sides of your blender if any of the yogurt or protein powder sticks to the sides.

Add orange juice or almond milk until you are happy with the consistency of the smoothie and enjoy!

This smoothie is delicious. So bright, refreshing and flavorful and with that beautiful color, it is hard not to be transported to a warm, sandy beach… even if you are enjoying it on a cold, dreary morning in your pj’s.
