Sprinkled Doggy Doughnuts

Does your dog have a special occasion coming up soon? Maybe a birthday, gotcha day or the anniversary of when they were officially crowned as the best dog ever (every day could fall into that category!)… regardless of the reason that celebrations are in order, your furry friends are going to love these “sprinkled” dog doughnuts!

This weeks “special occasion” is Kuro’s second birthday and although I doubt he had any idea this momentous occasion was on the horizon, I sure did and used it as an excuse to bake him these adorable little snacks.

The doughnuts are full of plain organic apple sauce, greek yogurt, cinnamon and turmeric… aka good stuff and the “frosting” is a simple greek yogurt dip. The sprinkles are just crushed up bones, but they are so cute and make them look like something I would want to order for myself.

Let’s get started…

To make a batch of about 30 mini doughnuts, gather 1 large egg, 1/2 cup of plain full-fat Greek yogurt, 2/3 cup of plain organic apple sauce, 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup or honey, 1 cup of whole wheat, oat or all purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of turmeric.

Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and turmeric in a large bowl and then add the egg, Greek yogurt, apple sauce and maple syrup and mix until everything is fully combined.

Easy, right?

Lightly grease a mini doughnut pan (you could make mini muffins with this batter too!) and fill each cavity half way. The batter is thick, so I transferred it all into a sandwich bag, cut off the tip and piped it into the cavities. It is one extra step, but saves time and wasted batter in the end.

Bake the doughnuts in a 350 degree oven for 6-8 minutes or until they feel set and springy to a light touch. As soon as they are done baking, transfer them onto a cooling rack.

Once they are cool, make some “frosting” by whisking 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 cup of cornstarch. This will create a very stiff frosting, which would be great for frosting little cupcakes, but I want to dip these doughnuts, so I whisked in a few teaspoons of milk to thin it out to more of a glaze consistency.

Dip the tops of each doughnut in the frosting and return them to the cooling rack. There will be enough frosting to glaze the entire doughnut if you want or double dip the tops. Once all of the doughnuts are glazed, crush up a few of your dogs favorite bones and sprinkle away…

Aren’t they adorable? So little and colorful and inviting…

Kuro was definitely a fan of his birthday doughnuts and I know your dog will love these tasty, healthy and absolutely adorable little sprinkled treats.
