Creamy Poppyseed Dressing

This creamy twist on a classic poppyseed dressing is one of my favorites. It gives you the sweet, tangy flavors that you expect from a poppyseed dressing, but they come to you in a smooth, creamy way. This dressing is perfect for when you want a little bit of everything on your salad, plus it takes just 6 common ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen right now.

Let’s get started…

Begin by gathering 1/2 cup of plain greek yogurt (full fat greek yogurt will give you the best flavor and creaminess, but lower fat greek yogurt will also work fine) or a good quality mayonnaise along with 2 tablespoons of milk, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 2 teaspoons of poppyseeds (I love Spice Islands Poppyseeds!) and an optional pinch of celery salt, dry mustard or turmeric.

When it comes to the spice options, I prefer the flavor that celery salt brings to this dressing, but dry mustard is a classic pairing with poppyseed dressings and turmeric will bring a warmth that fits nicely with this dressings creamy texture. I recommend making the dressing up without the spice, giving it a taste and then adding what you think you will enjoy most… or nothing at all, because it is delicious as is too!

Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk vigorously until creamy and evenly distributed.

The next step is the most important… choosing what you are going to drizzle this creamy, tangy, sweet goodness over. I usually pair this dressing with a big bed of greens, some berries and chopped nuts, like this strawberry arugula salad.

This creamy poppyseed dressing is just delicious and does a great job of hitting all of the important dressing flavor notes. It gives you the creaminess you want from a dressing with no oil needed and it checks off the salty, tangy, sweet and nutty flavors that a great salad should be dressed with.

So the next time you can’t decide whether you want a creamy dressing or a lighter one, something sweet or something tart, salty or tangy… remember, you don’t have to choose one…. you can have them all!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of plain greek yogurt (full fat recommended) or mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons of milk (whole or almond milk)
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 tablespoons of white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of poppyseeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • a pinch of celery salt, dry mustard or turmeric (optional)

Instructions

  • Combine all of the ingredients and whisk vigorously until completely combined. Taste and add optional spices or seasoning, if desired.
  • Serve immediately or chill in an airtight container
