Sage Butter Sauce

This simple sage butter sauce is the perfect pairing for freshly cooked gnocchi, some tender angel hair pasta or ravioli stuffed with something delicious. It comes together in minutes and adds a beautifully comforting and fragrant flavor to any dish it is spooned over.

Let’s get started…

Begin by adding 1/2 cup of salted butter into a sauce pot of skillet and place over medium heat. While the butter is melting, pick out 8-12 fresh sage leaves. If you want a more mild flavor, add 8 leaves, but if you love the flavor of sage then add 12 (or even more) leaves!

Sage is really beautiful. The leaves are soft and tender and they smell like the holidays… I am a big fan!

Toss your fresh sage leaves into the melted butter as soon as it begins to get a little foamy and let them cook while the butter browns a bit.

The amount that you brown your butter depends on your preference. Truly browned butter develops a beautifully nutty flavor, but be carefully to remove it from the heat as soon as the foam begins to disappear to prevent the butter from burning.

As soon as your butter is browned, transfer your cooked pasta directly into the pot or skillet and toss everything around. Although this sage butter sauce is delicious on its own, I love adding a sprinkle of finely shredded parmesan and some freshly cracked black pepper. This trio is just lovely.

This sage butter can be the only sauce for your pasta or it can be spooned over another sauce to add a layer of buttery goodness that finishes off so many pasta dishes in a fabulous way!
